Wildwood is celebrating the Route 66 Centennial with a year-long series of events and activities designed to commemorate the iconic “Mother Road” and boost local businesses.

The historic Route 66 corridor stretched from Chicago to Los Angeles when it was established in 1926. This iconic highway served as a vital western connection and inspired the development of small communities, lodging establishments, family-owned shops and distinctive roadside destinations.
Wildwood’s segment of Route 66 (Manchester Road) preserves numerous historic landmarks recognized locally and included on the National Register of Historic Places, making it a significant part of America’s original highway system.
In April, the State Historical Society of Missouri (SHSMO) visited Wildwood’s historic Route 66 corridor as part of a week-long tour celebrating the highway’s 100th anniversary.
Local residents Tom Kelpe and Rich Hardt led the SHSMO group through the city’s Route 66 Corridor using a 1922 Model T and a 1926 Chevrolet Coupe. The tour included stops at significant locations such as Big Chief Roadhouse, Stovall’s Grove and the Wildwood Historical Society (WHS).
The tour celebrated the notable people, locations and histories that have shaped the Mother Road over its hundred-year existence, according to Wildwood City Planner Robyn Keefe.
The centennial celebration will continue on May 24 at Parkside Grille with special Route 66-themed food and beverages. The festivities begin at 2 p.m., featuring live performances by Blues City Swing from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and Danny Steele and the Razor Boys from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
A three-day celebration is scheduled for July 17 to July 19. The Music on the Main concert takes place Friday, July 17 on the city’s newly created Village Green. The event will showcase Route 66-themed cuisine, entertainment and live music.
On Saturday, July 18, there will be a car cruise and additional celebrations along the highway. “Sunday Funday” on July 19 will offer special dining promotions, themed brunches and activities at neighborhood restaurants.
The celebration extends from Aug. 14 to 16 with a co-ed softball tournament for Wildwood businesses, organized by the Pond Athletic Association.
An outdoor film screening is planned for Aug. 21, showing Cars II.
Throughout October, the entire month will feature Haunted Route 66 events with spooky attractions and entertainment throughout the corridor.
